A few things from the weekend.

#1. I shot another set of recitals last night. Things went pretty well. The only snag was that the room was crowded (again) and I didn't have room to move around and get different angles, etc. The lighting wasn't great, but this time I decided to use the flash anyway. We'll see how they turn out and I will, of course, post some of the shots.

#2. I went to see both Wall*E and Wanted. Both were quite good in completely different ways. Wall*E impressed me the most. It amazed me how well everything came across in a film that has little to no dialogue for half of it's running time. And Pixar, as usual, made one of the best looking films I've ever seen. I highly recommend it.

I also recommend Wanted, but only as a fun, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride of an action movie. There's no film here, only action movie. It's an action movie. Seriously. As long as you don't expect too much from it; it's awesome. I will say that it takes some willful suspension of disbelief because they basically tell physics to go eff itself. Not like in The Matrix where all of the crazy action takes place in a computer program, but in "real life" they do things like curving bullets. Put it out of your mind, buy a popcorn and a coke and prepare to have your socks rocked.

#3. We adopted a new kitteh. :-) And here he is:

His name is going to be Helo (yes, like in Battlestar Galactica).
The poor little guy is a couple months old and was in the shelter with another kitten from his litter that had been rescued from a house fire. You can't really see it in the picture, but he's got some light burns on his face and his fur is singed in several places. We didn't really mean to adopt on Saturday, but when they said "rescued from a house fire" and "he does a trick" it was game over. His trick is that he'll climb up and ride on your shoulder. We go pick him up tonight.

So, it was a more eventful weekend than normal. :-)

1. You have 10 dollars and need to buy snacks at a gas station. What do you get?
Coke Zero, Beef Jerky, Slim Jim x2

2. If you were reincarnated as a sea creature, what would you want to be?
Killer Whale.

3. What do you order when you’re at IHOP?
Colorado Omelet!

5. Last book you read?
Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex

6. Describe your mood.
Bored but content.

7. Describe the last time you were injured.
I turned my ankle pretty badly playing disc golf a couple months ago. Badly enough that I had to skip work for a day.

8. Of all your friends, who would you want to be stuck in a well with?
I'm hoping that none of us will be getting stuck in a well. Ever.

9. Rock concert or symphony?
As much as I should say symphony: Rock concert.

10. What is the wallpaper of your cell phone?
An old Apple "Think Different" ad.

11. Do you think people talk about you behind your back?
Eh. Probably.

23. When was the last time you had gummy worms?
No clue.

24. What’s your favorite fruit?
Oranges and strawberries.

25. Do you have a picture of yourself doing a cartwheel?
No.

26. Have you ever eaten snow?
White snow, yes.

28. What color are your bedsheets?
Right now? Orange.

29.
Wedding pitchers.

Hi All. Just thought I'd pop in and post some pictures from the wedding I did a few weeks ago.

The lighting was really low in pretty much every area we shot in, so there's quite a bit of noise and grain in the pictures, but you do what you can, I guess.

Other than that...not much doing.
AdventureCon 2008

Heya Everyone.

Just thought I'd update and tell you a bit about AdventureCon this past weekend. They had fewer stars this year. And there were a lot that I didn't really know. Not that that makes them less worthy or anything, I'm just saying.

The main person I was excited about was Mr. Arthur Suydam. He is the artist behind the Marvel Zombies and Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness covers. I have been a huge fan of his work since I started picking up the aforementioned books. So, I got him to do a sketch for me. I asked him to do a headshot of Zombie Hulk.

There's the sketch itself.

And here Mr. Suydam is in the act.

It was pretty awesome. When I asked him to do the sketch he said, "Would you like to hang out and talk while I draw it?" He was the nicest guy.

Anyway, I guess that's all for me.

Oh, hello Zombies!

You are in a mall when the zombies attack. You have:

1. one weapon.
2. one song blasting on the speakers.
3. one famous person to fight alongside you.

Weapon can be real or fictional, you may assume endless ammo if applicable. Person can be real or fictional. (stolen from honorh

1. Ideally? Shaolin Spade or a "Lobo"(lobotomizer) from World War Z by Max Brooks. But, a cricket bat would be OK. :-)

2. honorh used "Under Pressure" by Queen/David Bowie. That's a really good one, but since I don't want to be a copy-cat how about "Monkey Wrench" by Foo Fighters.

3. How about Chow Yun-Fat. A master swordsman would be handy when needing to decapitate a Zombie horde. :-)

What about you all?

Well, the wedding this past weekend went very smoothly. The bride and groom and their families were the most laid back people I've ever seen at a wedding.

However, the room in which the ceremony took place was the darkest space I have ever, ever had to shoot in. Those shots might not be very terrific. :-)

I'm still very tired because the reception was very long, but it was fun. I could probably stand doing more. :-)

Anyway, other than that there's not a lot going on. Yesterday was my dad's birthday and I'm a doofus and forgot to call yesterday. I did call just a few minutes ago with belated b-day wishes and he doesn't so much care about his birth-iversary anyway. So it was ok.

I'll post some of the wedding pictures when I get a chance.

I had an exceptionally long weekend because Lisa and I were sickly yesterday. I think we just overdid it this weekend.

Moving on.

This weekend I have my first solo wedding gig and I am terrified. Mostly it just scares me out of my mind that they've trusted me with their wedding photos and that I might eff them up. I will be very relieved when it's over.

I don't really have a lot to write about otherwise.

I guess that's all, really.

I would just like to state that the Double Espresso Shot on Ice from Starbucks is like Crystal Meth in a cup. It's Crystal Meth in a cup. The Double Espresso Shot on Ice is Crystal Meth.

I drink Starbucks a bit because it's less than 2 minutes from my place of work walking. Not a huge fan, but it's right there. This drink has made me uncomfortable energetic.

Like Power Thirst.

If you want to have more nervous energy than you know what to do with for one hour then crash go get one.

Now.

Do it.

D-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-do it.

Recital picutres from May 4.

So I was asked by Allied Music Instructors to come and shoot their last guitar recital on May 4. Here are a few of the shots.

On the video game front: I downloaded and started Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as King yesterday. So far I'm really impressed with the quality of the game. It's weird to be on the opposite side of the usual Final Fantasy equation. Instead of getting a quest from the powers that be, completing it and getting rewarded you are the powers that be. It's pretty cool.

That's all.

Some other post somewhere is wittier, funnier, and less full of crap.

Well, let's see. It's been awhile so I should have lots to write about.

I'm continuing to play the disc golfs. Shocking I know being that disc golf takes place outdoors and requires a fair amount of walking. Walking is good for me. As is being outdoors.

Yesterday I completely had my fill of Mother Nature, though. Lisa stayed home sick with some kind of stomach thing and then she needed to go to the doctor so I left work and took her there. It took so long at her appointment that by the time I got home I figured I wouldn't go back to work, so I put Lisa to bed and went out and worked in the yard. That feels so weird. I worked in our yard.

Anyway, so I was outside from about 3pm until about 5pm which is when I needed to go to Wal-mart to get some more lawn/garden stuff. I get back around 6pm and then go play disc golf. I was outside until around 9pm. In a way it was very cool. In another way I'm very itchy and sneezy.

On a different note, I'll go ahead and say that Mario Kart: Wii is pretty good. There were a lot of reviews I read that went something like this: "Well, there's not really anything new here so it generally isn't very good." To those people I say, "WTF?" Really people, do you know what I wanted out of Mario Kart: Wii? MORE MARIO KART! Why rag on the new Mario Kart game for just being more Mario Kart? What else did you want? They added bikes, which are pretty sweet and the new track designs are brilliant. Plus, it's still one of the best party games around. Honestly.

Also, I rented Grand Theft Auto IV. I'm only a half-hour into the game, and I had major reservations about the game. I stopped caring about GTA about halfway through Vice City So far, though, it looks like Rockstar Games has knocked this one out of the park. It looks great, the car physics are pretty realistic without being tedious, the radio stations are great as always and the voice acting is stellar. What really blew me away, though, was once I took control and started moving around Liberty City. The other Liberty City-ites AI is incredible. They (as I've read in reviews but was skeptical about) really do react like real people. Or at least more so than previous incarnations. The cops are still jerks, but at least they seem to be more consistent with what constitutes a wanted rating. Gone are the times when you barely brush a cop car and they come after you only to slam into one full force totally destroying both vehicles later on the same day and the Po-Po inside completely ignore you.

Anyway, I guess that's it. Not much to see here, people. Some filler. That's all. :-)

My first car was a 1993 Geo Metro convertible. I loved that little car. Sure it wouldn't go past 70 mph unless it was going downhill with a tailwind, but still. It was fun to drive, it was a convertible and it got 50 miles per gallon (because it only had a 3-cylinder engine).

/sniff

Here you go.

1. I want my lamp back. I'm gonna need it to get out of this slimy mudhole.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

2.
OK. Ranty-rant.

I'm here today to talk to you about the state of popular music. Popular Rock in particular has become a festering wasteland of "emo-core" or some such crap. Lisa and I were listening to Mancow on the way to work this morning and during a program break our local station (the X) decided to play some filler music. Three Days Grace's song "Pain" was the chosen ear-drill. A sample of their lyrics:

"Pain, without love
Pain, I can't get enough
Pain, I like it rough
'Cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all!"

I'm pretty sure some producer came up with the finalized lyrics. I've gotten an exclusive that pretty much proves it. I've gotten hold of the original lyrics sheet for this song. Don't ask how. Many Bothans died to bring us this information. Here are the original four opening lines.

"Pain, pain pain pain.
Pain, painy-painy pain pain.
Pain, pain pain pain,
'Cause I like pain, painy-painy-pain pain!"

I acquired most of my musical tastes from my aunt (grew up in the 80s. She gave me my first album: Bon Jovi's 7800 Fahrenheit on vinyl) and growing through my teen years in the 90s. Arguably a recent heyday for popular music. I don't want to be unfair here. I know that a lot of the lyrics that come from the 80s and 90s weren't great. Mostly the just didn't make sense, though. They didn't read like Gothy McEmosen's LiveJournal. For example:

"With the lights out its less dangerous
Here we are now, Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yeah!"

Those, in case you were born after 1985 or have been living in a cave for the last 20 years, are the lyrics to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. Mostly the reaction to this song (in the current intarweb vernacular) would be "lolwut?" Still, there's undeniably something there upon listening to the song. The lyrics and the music fuse into something that caught the attention of everyone who likes rock music. Even my cousins (born in the late 80s) liked them after I made them listen to it. Modern "rock" can only be popular with current fans. They're kind of like Bush was in the 90s. There's no room for a band like bush outside of their time. The thing is that Bush was just one band. The vast majority of bands now feel like that. In 15 years will we be talking about Three Days Grace or Fallout Boy like people still talk about Nirvana or Smashing Pumpkins or Pearl Jam? I hope not.

I also don't want to leave you with the impression that I'm becoming an old fogey musically. I am becoming an old fogey, just not about the arts. I really enjoy several bands that I've discovered recently. The Decemberists, The New Pornographers, Coheed and Cambria, etc. I just can't handle Creed and their various knockoffs. Nickleback, I'm looking at you. You suck.

Sorry, I meant to be more objective that that, but it's the truth. If you need more post-production than Milli-Vanilli or Backstreet then you. are. not. a rock band.

Anyway, I've made my point. Before I completely lose my objectivity and just start listing bands that suck I'm going to go.

For your ear/eye-bleeding pleasure: The "Pain" music video via Youtube.

<lj-embed id="19" />

Well, we actually saw a movie this weekend.

We went to see Juno this weekend and it was really good. A lot of the reviews I had read called it "good, but overly precious" and I disagree. It was pretty sentimental in places, but I don't think overly so.

Michael Cera turned in another solid performance as that nerdy, awkward, gangly guy. Ellen Page was excellent as the title character. She was the highlight of the film. She never failed to really portray how her character was feeling. Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner and the rest of the cast were pretty great as well. I can wholeheartedly recommend this film.

Also, the screenplay is by Diablo Cody. She wrote the book Candy Girl. Terrific book.

Anyway, we're in the house and we found out that tumbled is our across-the-street neighbor. Weird, right? Also pretty awesome.

Except for a few things still at the condo we are moved. Tonight will be our first night in our new place. Hells Yes.

Also, kudos to Comcast. This is the first time I've ever had them do anything and it be right the first time. The complete verdict is still out, however, because we have yet to test the big TV on the cable outlet downstairs. Luckily, though, everything else has worked. Whee!

I. Love. Our. House. My dad came today and put in our garage door opener (I helped, but not much. I'm carpentry retarded).

Now. I eat. Well, soon I eat. Then I sleep.

Later peoples.
