It's that time again.

This is a call for submissions, so to speak.

I'm going to be getting another tattoo after Christmas, I think. So, what I'd like is suggestions. I figure a lot of you know me pretty well and have pretty good ideas as to what I like. Feel free to post pictures (and if you're the drawing type feel free to design one if you'd like :-) ).

How was everyone's Thanksgiving? We had a good time, lots of driving, lots of food.

That's all.

Some things to talk about.

1. Go. Vote. I don't care what your politics are. Go vote. Go. Whatever you're doing will probably still be there when you get back. Go.

2. I'd like to talk for a minute about a problem plaguing modern sci-fi and fantasy fiction. Authors who feel that making up words = interesting and/or good writing. Randall Munroe from XKCD and I seem to be on the same page. The number of made up words is inversely proportional to how good we think the book is. (Disclaimer: I don't know Randall Munroe, I just wish I did...is that creepy?) This leads me to my second point: Anathem by Neal Stephenson has more made up words than I've seen in a book ever. Don't give me any of this "Tolkien maked up werds all the time!" Tolkien made up entire languages. Even if you didn't like the books you have to admit that's pretty awesome. Also, the languages were there because there were different races in Middle Earth.

In the foreword Mr. Stephenson explains to us that his story doesn't take place on Earth, but rather a planet very similar to earth. I imagine this is supposed to explain the proliferation of non-existent words. It didn't appease me. The new words didn't add anything to the story and most times detracted from it. Every page or so there was a dictionary entry defining the made-up language and every time I had to stop and read one I felt the story slipping away and it made me angry.

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I didn't finish the book. Perhaps there's something utterly astounding and wonderful past page 75 or so, but I didn't have the patience to go wading for it. The entirety of what I read felt like I was slogging through waist-deep muck. Don't get me wrong here; I don't mind a tough read. I like a challenge every now and again. Tolkien (again) has always been a tough, thought-provoking read for me and I love The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (The Silmarillion, however, not so much). Anathem wasn't difficult because it was thought provoking. It was difficult because (to me) it was pretentious.
That's all about that.

Happy election day, folks!

I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 100.

That number should be easy enough for some of you to guess. It's an answer. An answer to a question that no one has asked. The question itself is unknown.

Guess it and you will be rewarded with enlightenment of a sort and a never-ending quest for a question.

----------------------------

So, I've not shot any pictures this week. I've got a shooting assignment for class and I need to work on that, but more importantly I need to be taking pictures and making mistakes. I need to start carrying my camera with me more often. I've got to start making time for photography.

----------------------------

I guess that's all, really.

I think I'd prefer to stay inside....

If this election isn't over soon it is going to kill me.

Seriously.

Take this story for example. I'm no McCain/Palin fan, but come on! How the hell is this news? So she was blessed by a Kenyan pastor. Perhaps witchcraft is something that is mentioned a lot in their parish? I'm doubting she asked to be blessed against witchcraft. Why. Is. This. News?

Gah!

Now on the other side of the coin, McCain is trying to postpone the VP debate. Ostensibly this is to protest Congress for not passing the $700 billion financial bailout that is on the table. However, I continually wonder why they're shielding Palin from the media. I would think that if she's actually going to be this huge shot in the arm for the Republican campaign (and not end up being a huge liability) that they'd want her out in the spotlight as much as possible.

Personally, I think the McPalin campaign knows that Joe Biden will take her apart in the debate.

Anyway, that's all I guess.

Masterpiece Theatre

Good morning my fine intarweb friends.

I would like to start this post on a positive note: My photography class is teh awesome. I learned more in the first class than I have in 2 years of trying to figure this out on my own.

The next thing I have to talk to you about is Rock Band 2. I finally picked it up last night and Echols, Jordan and I ended up rocking until the wee hours. Well, 12:45am. Is that a wee hour?

Anyway, it's pretty excellent. A lot of reviews have been of the "ho hum, more of the same" variety and I agree to and extent (except for the ho hum part). The rock band formula is still there. But you know what? It's still hella fun. It's still engaging and it still makes me feel like a rock star for a little while. Everyone should feel like a rock star for a little while. The major updates (on the 360 version)are to the UI and to the communication times. The new UI is gorgeous. It is beautiful and way more functional than RB 1. The "communicating with the Rock Central Server" business is all but gone. And the save times are incredibly fast. Signing in and creating characters is much smoother and less time consuming as well. Also, the Band Challenges and online challenges are crazy fun.

If you already own GH III/Rock Band 1 instruments they work fine. I hear the new drums are much more responsive and are quieter, though.

Doggy Update

Hey folks, thanks for all the kind words and support.

Turns out our friend Amanda has found the dogs. It now looks like one of the neighbor's kid (who has been seen throwing rocks at the dogs before) let them out before he got on the school bus this morning.

They're back and safe now and they're going to keep an eye on them just in case the kid did something else to them as well.

Yay dogs are back!

Sad and Angry

Someone broke the gate at our friends' house this morning and took all of their dogs. And our dog.

Wash was living with them until we could scrape the money together to fence our yard and we were going to bring him home.

I guess we were too slow.

Tazewell friends: keep an eye out for the following please.
1. Wash: Answers to Wash. Terrier mix. Approx. 30 lbs. Brown and white for the most part, some black on his face. He is microchipped, but it's a passive thing so he'd have to be scanned at a vet before anyone would contact us. Male.

2. Bubbles: Answers to Bubbles. Dark brown almost black. Med. sized dog probably weighs around 20-25 lbs. Female. Pees on herself if she gets overly excited.

3. Cow-cow: Answers to Cow-cow. Black and white markings like a cow. Very short legs. Small - Med. size. Maybe 15-20 lbs. Male. Incredibly high-pitched bark.

If you guys see any of them (I'm not hopeful and I'll tell you why in a minute) give me a call if you have my number or text me from my profile page. I think that still works.

This comes after their first outside dog, Sam was poisoned. He'd gotten out of the fence once and was on the neighbors property so the neighbor (although they can't prove it) gave him a bowl of anti-freeze to drink. Their replacements were a little stray named Sadie who was terrified of everyone but Todd and a black lab named Jake. Someone poisoned Sadie right after she'd had Cow-cow and Bubbles and then threatened to poison Jake so they sent him somewhere else to live. Now they've stolen our dogs and I doubt we'll ever see them again because if it's the same scumbag they'll probably be dead.

I'm so angry I can't even think right now.

Thanks in advance for keeping your eyes open.

WTB end of the elections.

Seriously. Why can't people just decide who they're going to vote for then stop trying to goad me into an argument?

I think the McCain campaign is patronizing women - specifically the disillusioned Hillary supporters - and expect all of them to blindly vote Vagina. I don't mean that vaginas are bad just so we're clear. :-)

You can choose to ignore what I just said or you can start a discussion. However, belligerence, trolling or goading will not be tolerated.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I picked up Too Human and Braid this week. Braid is fantastic. Great 2D side-scrolling wonderful. Good puzzling and the time-manipulation mechanics are both simple and extremely versatile. All around fun. $15 from Xbox Live Arcade

Too Human is also a lot better than the reviewers gave credit for. The combat is indeed a little wonky. The camera is indeed stupid a heck of a lot of the time. However, the setting, the story and the joy of slashing through a roomful of enemies doesn't get old. I like it. So ther. $59.99 from Target/Gamestop/Wal-mart, etc.

I'm very sad. Disappointed and sad.

I'm not sure, even, where to start here.

Ender's Game changed the way I read Science Fiction. Speaker for the Dead changed the way I looked at our collective future. The rest of the Ender saga had me ravenously reading for weeks on end and anxiously awaiting future books.

Orson Scott Card has changed the way I think about him and his books forever.

I'm a big proponent of live and let live. What you believe is what you believe. When you start inciting revolution over something so trivial then it affects me and mine. Seriously, Mr. Card? Homosexual marriage is the tipping point for you? It's not the war on an ideal that has gone on longer and cost more than it ever should have? It's not the economy that gets more and more shaky as days go by? It's not the fact that prices on necessities (gas and food mainly) continue to increase exponentially? Two men or two women wanting to get married is what would bring you to open revolt against your government?

Granted, being Mormon I would never expect you to be OK with the idea of gay marriage and that's fine with me. I don't expect everyone to be ok with it. If you're not: fine. If you are: fine. Your belief. But open revolution? Come on.

Anyway, I'm finished. Besides, Michael Swaim over at Cracked.com has already said everything that needs to be said.

I know there's probably a ton of you who don't agree with me on this topic and like I've already said, that's fine. I'm not trying to push an agenda here, I'm just trying to get something off my chest.

I've never had anything but good out of my friend's list but this topic can certainly polarize people. Comment as you will (if you will) but just remember that we're friends OK?

Writer's Block: In the Event of a Zombie Emergency

Are you prepared for a zombie outbreak, or are you just going to wing it?

View 500 Answers

I'm prepared for everything up to a level 4 Doomsday outbreak. I recommend that anyone and everyone read Max Brooks' Zombie Survival Guide. You'll thank me for it. I know Zombies are imaginary, and yes I know everyone thinks I'm off my nut because of this, but hear me now: I'll be ready. When the dead walk the earth; I'll be ready.

Doom. Doooom! DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

On a different topic: today should be tapioca pudding day.

A few things from the weekend.

#1. I shot another set of recitals last night. Things went pretty well. The only snag was that the room was crowded (again) and I didn't have room to move around and get different angles, etc. The lighting wasn't great, but this time I decided to use the flash anyway. We'll see how they turn out and I will, of course, post some of the shots.

#2. I went to see both Wall*E and Wanted. Both were quite good in completely different ways. Wall*E impressed me the most. It amazed me how well everything came across in a film that has little to no dialogue for half of it's running time. And Pixar, as usual, made one of the best looking films I've ever seen. I highly recommend it.

I also recommend Wanted, but only as a fun, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride of an action movie. There's no film here, only action movie. It's an action movie. Seriously. As long as you don't expect too much from it; it's awesome. I will say that it takes some willful suspension of disbelief because they basically tell physics to go eff itself. Not like in The Matrix where all of the crazy action takes place in a computer program, but in "real life" they do things like curving bullets. Put it out of your mind, buy a popcorn and a coke and prepare to have your socks rocked.

#3. We adopted a new kitteh. :-) And here he is:

His name is going to be Helo (yes, like in Battlestar Galactica).
The poor little guy is a couple months old and was in the shelter with another kitten from his litter that had been rescued from a house fire. You can't really see it in the picture, but he's got some light burns on his face and his fur is singed in several places. We didn't really mean to adopt on Saturday, but when they said "rescued from a house fire" and "he does a trick" it was game over. His trick is that he'll climb up and ride on your shoulder. We go pick him up tonight.

So, it was a more eventful weekend than normal. :-)

1. You have 10 dollars and need to buy snacks at a gas station. What do you get?
Coke Zero, Beef Jerky, Slim Jim x2

2. Describe the last time you were injured.
I turned my ankle pretty badly playing disc golf a couple months ago. Badly enough that I had to skip work for a day.

8.
Wedding pitchers.

Hi All. Just thought I'd pop in and post some pictures from the wedding I did a few weeks ago.

The lighting was really low in pretty much every area we shot in, so there's quite a bit of noise and grain in the pictures, but you do what you can, I guess.

Other than that...not much doing.
AdventureCon 2008

Heya Everyone.

Just thought I'd update and tell you a bit about AdventureCon this past weekend. They had fewer stars this year. And there were a lot that I didn't really know. Not that that makes them less worthy or anything, I'm just saying.

The main person I was excited about was Mr. Arthur Suydam. He is the artist behind the Marvel Zombies and Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness covers. I have been a huge fan of his work since I started picking up the aforementioned books. So, I got him to do a sketch for me. I asked him to do a headshot of Zombie Hulk.

There's the sketch itself.

And here Mr. Suydam is in the act.

It was pretty awesome. When I asked him to do the sketch he said, "Would you like to hang out and talk while I draw it?" He was the nicest guy.

Anyway, I guess that's all for me.

Oh, hello Zombies!

You are in a mall when the zombies attack. You have:

1. one weapon.
2. one song blasting on the speakers.
3. one famous person to fight alongside you.

Weapon can be real or fictional, you may assume endless ammo if applicable. Person can be real or fictional. (stolen from honorh

1. Ideally? Shaolin Spade or a "Lobo"(lobotomizer) from World War Z by Max Brooks. But, a cricket bat would be OK. :-)

2. honorh used "Under Pressure" by Queen/David Bowie. That's a really good one, but since I don't want to be a copy-cat how about "Monkey Wrench" by Foo Fighters.

3. How about Chow Yun-Fat. A master swordsman would be handy when needing to decapitate a Zombie horde. :-)

What about you all?

A) tell you why I friended you,
B) associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, etc.,
C) tell you something I like about you,
D) tell you a memory I have of you,
E) ask something I've always wanted to know about you,
F) tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
G) In return, you must post this in your LJ. (If you don't, gremlins will find you and eat your legs)

Please keep in mind that I'm terrible at keeping up with stuff like this, so if I haven't done it in awhile I apologize. :-)

Well, the wedding this past weekend went very smoothly. The bride and groom and their families were the most laid back people I've ever seen at a wedding.

However, the room in which the ceremony took place was the darkest space I have ever, ever had to shoot in. Those shots might not be very terrific. :-)

I'm still very tired because the reception was very long, but it was fun. I could probably stand doing more. :-)

Anyway, other than that there's not a lot going on. Yesterday was my dad's birthday and I'm a doofus and forgot to call yesterday. I did call just a few minutes ago with belated b-day wishes and he doesn't so much care about his birth-iversary anyway. So it was ok.

I'll post some of the wedding pictures when I get a chance.
